Michael Douglas is someone whom I instantly recognized as a movie star. He had already had several careers’ worth of work when I was coming of age. Both of Douglas’s parents were actors, and he took that and ran with it, also working as a producer. Douglas was so established when I started to really learn about who he was that I kind of assumed he was someone I wouldn’t see onscreen for much longer. Clearly, someone who got their start in the late 60s would be packing it in by the 2000s, right? Incorrect!
Not only did Douglas continue working, but he even did so after receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2010. The actor was told he had throat cancer, which was later revealed to be tongue cancer. At first, Douglas said he got sick due to years of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. He would later claim that it was a kind of cancer transmitted from the human papillomavirus via cunnilingus. At that point, he could have called it quits. He did not!
It isn’t like Douglas has slowed down, either. He’s spent the last several years as a part of the Marvel universe in my least favorite films in the franchise. While I don’t care for the Ant-Man films, I can acknowledge that talented people work on them, and Douglas is certainly part of that class. Are they as funny as they claim to be? That’s up for debate, if ya ask me. Regardless, Douglas clearly had fun doing them, and even though Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania may end up being one of his last films, at least he wants that?
Douglas recently explained at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival that he likely won’t return to acting unless “something special came up.” The actor starred in a film called Looking Through Water, in which he co-stars with his son Cameron, which is due to be released this year. Cameron Douglas has returned to acting after dealing with addiction issues that landed him in prison. I’m sure Michael sees starring in a film with his son as “something special.” But that will be a high bar to clear going forward.
“I’ve had a very busy career. Now, I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realized I had to stop,” Michael Douglas explained at the festival. “I’d been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set,” he noted. “I’m very happy with taking the time off. I have no real intentions. But I say I’m not retired, because if something special came up, I’d go back. But otherwise, I’m quite happy. I just like to watch my wife work.” Good for him.
I’m always happy to see someone take a look at all they’ve done and decide to sit back and enjoy it. Not everyone has that luxury. I hope Douglas sticks to it. It will be hard, though. Because you know that Avengers: Doomsday budget is gonna be insane. Maybe a dump truck full of money will also be “something special.”
