What the Hell Is Going On with 'South Park' This Week?

There won’t be a new episode of South Park tonight, a week after the Comedy Central series took aim at the president, his “teeny tiny penis,” and his relationship with Satan. A teaser for next week’s episode, however, shows Donald Trump still cavorting with the Devil.

It’s not unusual for the series to skip a week during the season, but it is unusual to do so immediately after a premiere. While an anonymous source within Paramount claimed the break was preplanned, Matt Stone and Trey Parker gave no indication of that at Comic-Con over the weekend. They said they hadn’t yet come up with an idea for this week’s episode, and earlier reports based on TV listings had suggested there would be one.

There are really two possibilities here: One, the guys simply didn’t come up with an idea in time and needed a few extra days, which wouldn’t be unusual for a show that often comes together at the last minute. Last week’s episode is a tough act to follow, and they may just need more time to get it right.

The other possibility? Next week’s episode drops on August 6. While the FCC has approved the Skydance/Paramount merger, it’s not expected to officially close until August 7. Given the backlash from last week’s episode, it’s possible Paramount or Skydance hit pause to avoid another wave of anti-Trump headlines that could complicate the deal.

What’s for damn sure is this: the South Park team had no shortage of fresh material this week, as the president made a stunning number of new admissions that blew holes in his previous narratives about Jeffrey.
