This is some awkward timing. On the heels of Warner Bros. Discovery’s future dramatically changing hands from Netflix to Paramount thanks to nonsensically overpriced bid, we’re supposed to believe that a Game of Thrones movie is somehow going to get made.
According to an exclusive report from Page Six Hollywood, a vertical I didn’t even know existed until now, Andor writer Beau Willimon has reportedly turned in a script that the studio loved.
Sources tell P6H that WBD’s leadership team was pumped on Willimon’s draft, and that the storyline may center on Aegon I, who spawned the Targaryen dynasty and united six of the seven kingdoms through bloody conquest about 300 years before the original “Game of Thrones” pilot. “All of ‘Game of Thrones’ stems back to him, and you’ve never seen him on any of the shows,” says a source familiar with the project.
On paper, all of this sounds exciting. Willimon is responsible for easily the best mini-arc in all of Andor: The Narkina 5 prison. He also gets props for Syril and Dedra’s booty call in Season 2, so I think my man is ready for George R.R. Martin’s bewbs and dragons fantasy land.
Of course, all of this hinges on what the heck happens to Warner Bros. now that David Ellison’s vampire teeth are hovering over it. Paramount’s shareholder presumably want to make money, and you can’t do that unless you’re actually putting out movies that people want to watch. This bodes well for James Gunn, and presumably Game of Thrones, which has stayed a ratings juggernaut even after the series finale ran the flagship series into the ground.
Also, I saw a bunch of weirdo right wingers claim House of the Dragon is for “us” — yup, read that as racistly as possible — so I’m sure that will go a long way in protecting this project under the new regime. What an incredible time to work in pop culture.
I’ll be tossing my laptop into the sea if anyone needs me.
