Last year, the widow of Michael Crichton brought a suit against WBDiscover/Max over its upcoming series, The Pitt. She claims that the original creator of ER, John Wells, and the original star of ER, Noah Wyle, developed a sequel to ER, but they could not work out a deal with her over her late husband’s rights because she wanted her husband to have a “created by” credit on the series.
After negotiations fell apart, Shari Crichton claimed, the series basically just moved to Pittsburgh Hospital and gave itself a new name, The Pitt, although the premise to both series — and most hospital dramas, to be fair — is the same: “The shows share the chaotic formula of overworked doctors in an underfunded urban hospital, whose personal lives are explored in between patient crises.”
Anyway, here’s the trailer for The Pitt, which is part of Max’s efforts to make some more meat-and-potatoes procedurals to go along with HBO’s prestige television. I love a good hospital drama, and honestly, it’s hard to beat one from the creator of the best, even though this is definitely not a sequel to it. Ahem.
The Pitt arrives in January 2025. I am going to watch the shit out of it.
