Talk To Me hit me like a truck in all the best ways. I marveled at its confidence, terror, and young energy. Watching it in a packed theater on a Saturday night made me feel cooler than most things I’ve done. It felt like I witnessed the beginnings of a new force for cinema in the form of YouTubers turned filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou. The film felt young and exciting in a genuine way. I loved the movie so much that I spent most of the fourth game of the 2023 World Series rewatching Talk To Me with my wife (anyone even passingly familiar with my love of the MLB franchise Texas Rangers knows how big of a deal this is). One question has remained since I saw that film: What would the directors do next?
Well, this morning A24 answered that question when they dropped the teaser trailer for the Philippou brothers’ sophomore outing, titled Bring Her Back. The first look reveals very little about the film but has the pair’s signature style, bonkers imagination, and ability to scare the pants off of folks front and center. The imagery on display is disturbing and hints at a narrative that could be just as devastating as their feature debut. I loved Talk To Me even though it leaves you feeling cold. Bring Her Back looks like it has the capacity to be just as bleak as its predecessor. Count me the hell in.
Another exciting aspect of the new film is the cast. With the exception of Miranda Otto, Talk To Me featured relatively unknown (albeit incredibly talented) young actors in its cast. Bring Her Back will continue that trend but with Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins front and center as a foster mother with a horrifying secret. Hawkins’ addition to the cast, especially as a potential villain, has me foaming at the mouth for this film (and it has nothing to do with that rat that bit me last week I hope).
I don’t want to get too excited and set myself up for potential disappointment (no creator is perfect, nor will their work appeal to everyone always), but the trailer gives me the same feeling I had watching Talk To Me. These two directors are fresh and exciting and the mere fact that they are making a new film is a reason to celebrate. That said film looks further rooted in their artistic confidence is sending that excitement into overdrive. While I try to avoid fuller theaters these days, I will be seated opening weekend for this one, ready to get scared along with everyone else.
Bring Her Back will hit theaters on May 30.
