I have to hope that certain people will be remembered by history as the charlatans that they are. Some may come away relatively unscathed thanks to the massive amounts of money they spent (I expect Elon Musk to be described as “complicated” long after his death), but there are those who are more of a bottom-feeding scum than a nepo billionaire protected by their wealth. Alex Jones is such scum, and, if I believed in an afterlife, his would be pretty darn hot.
The man has spent years spewing hateful, racist, misogynistic, bigoted, homophobic, idiotic nonsense, and has, at times, posed a real danger to society. He also spent a significant amount of time trying to prove that the tragic murder of 20 children and six faculty members at their school was a hoax. It is horrendous work that he has luckily faced some consequences for, though nothing will ever properly fix the pain and anguish he inflicted on those parents.
Jones lost a lawsuit to the families of the victims, ordering him to pay $1.3 billion to them as a result. Those payments would be handled by Free Speech Systems, the parent company of InfoWars, which was handed over to a court representative. When InfoWars was first put up for auction, a Texas judge halted The Onion’s ability to purchase it. Now, it’s been put back on the docket, and The Onion is actually seeking to license the property at $81,000 a month, which would go to Free Speech Systems, which would then go to the families of the Sandy Hook victims. It’s pretty beautiful.
The Onion has enlisted comedian Tim Heidecker to be the creative director of whatever the property turns into. While it looks like it will be a parody of its original incarnation at first, Heidecker and Onion CEO Ben Collins have made it clear that it will eventually just turn into a source for comedy. It’s being relaunched with a rainbow logo. Alex Jones took off his shirt during a livestream to complain about the whole thing. It’s going really well.
Ale Jones’ legacy should be one of scorn and mockery. He is the dregs of what society has to offer, and the empire he built being used to humiliate him and pay the victims of his cruelty a fraction of what they deserve feels like a win that I want to hold onto for dear life.
