Alas, the campaign to resurrect Johnny Depp’s career is gaining momentum. He’s currently filming Day Drinker with director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man), starring alongside Penélope Cruz. He also has a Terry Gilliam project in the works, where he plays Satan opposite Jeff Bridges’ God. And now? He’s set to portray Ebenezer Scrooge.

Humbug.

The film comes from director Ti West—who, to be fair, is great. Most recently, he helmed the X trilogy for A24, and I’ve always had a soft spot for one of his earlier horror films, The Innkeepers.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol will pair Depp with Andrea Riseborough and has already been slated for a November 2026 release. This isn’t some moody arthouse retelling—Robert Eggers is already tackling that version with Willem Dafoe. This one’s from Paramount under David Ellison, signaling a very deliberate push to rehabilitate Depp’s career.

And let’s be honest: you know he’s going to play Scrooge like a Victorian Jack Sparrow. It’s bound to be unbearable, and depending on the national mood—which currently feels like one long shrug emoji—it could either tank Ti West’s recent goodwill or, worse, succeed.
