With The Bride, Maggie Gyllenhaal has taken the experiment Mary Shelley destroyed in her original novel and brought it back to life. Stylistically, The Bride seems more beholden to Blade Runner, classic gangster films, and Nine Inch Nails (Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is scoring the film) than it does to the 1935 film The Bride of Frankenstein . That just proves the ol’ girl still has some raucous, vivid life in her yet.
I don’t know what this bride is throwing, but it’s probably not a bouquet.
The Bride stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Penélope Cruz, Annette Bening, and Julianne Hough. It opens in theaters on March 6th.
Stranger Things isn’t over yet, but Joe Keery (aka Steve With The Best Hair) is already set to battle the next Big Bad in Cold Storage. Putting together the screenwriter of Jurassic Park and the producer of Zombieland is like putting together peanut butter and chocolate.
Liam Neeson, Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Lesley Manville, Sosie Bacon, and Vanessa Redgrave (really?) also star in this zombie horror comedy that will be released on February 6th.
I feel bad teasing you with movies that aren’t going to be available to watch for months. But Wayward is something creepy that you can watch on Netflix right now.
Eight episodes of Mae Martin being adorable and Toni Collette being an over-the-top weirdo? Sign me up!
Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis), Alyvia Alyn Lind, and Sydney Topliffe also star.
All episodes of Wayward are available to stream on Netflix.
For this week’s laginappe, I’m giving you the gift of knowing the dog lives in Good Boy. (Jason reviewed it as part of Fantasia Fest.) We should all see it when it’s available in theaters on October 3rd.
