The Ultimate Man Crush Has a New TV Series

I was late to the game on Jensen Ackles, only discovering about five years ago that he’s the be-all-end-all of ultimate mancrushes. The guy is the embodiment of masculinity without ever tipping into toxic territory. He’s the kind of man you can have a beer with, jam with, split some logs with, and he’ll never talk shit about his wife while you’re hanging out. He’ll even belt out that Bon Jovi song with you at karaoke.

He’s good people. I’m glad he has a new show, too. While he was great in The Boys, his character wasn’t exactly likable. And before that, there was Big Sky, a show I want to say was unjustly canceled, but honestly, it wasn’t that great (though it did feature Ackles and Kylie Bunbury, which counts for something).

Ackles is back in Prime Video’s upcoming series, Countdown, also starring Eric Dane and Jessica Camacho. It’s a weekly summer series launching June 25th. The show comes from Derek Haas, the guy who wrote the brilliant 3:10 to Yuma and also knows his way around a network procedural; he’s behind one of those FBI shows and one of those Chicago shows.

Countdown seems like a hybrid of both. Ackles plays an LAPD detective investigating the murder of a Department of Homeland Security officer, only to uncover a sprawling conspiracy that threatens millions. It’s standard procedural fodder, but if Ackles could make Supernatural work for 16 seasons, he can make this work, too. And Jessica Camacho, fresh off Bosch: Legacy, is a strong addition.

Prime Video just released some images from the series, and we’ve got them for you below. And based on the images, it will almost certainly be a middling show, meaningfully elevated by Ackles’ presence.
