The Real Reason Hulu Scrapped Its Bill Belichick Documentary

This one goes out to those of you who relish the career downfall of Bill Belichick, the progeny of evil who won six Super Bowl titles with the Patriots before Tom Brady left and Belichick’s career went into freefall. After a few losing seasons, the Pats fired Belichick, who spent a year grumbling humorlessly during Monday Night Football’s Manningcast before taking a job with the University of North Carolina football team, where he has coached the Tar Heels to a miserable 2-3 record amid rumors that he’s about to be pushed out before he’s even finished his first season because of the toxic culture he’s created in the locker room.

Meanwhile, Hulu had brought in a documentary crew to follow Belichick’s first season as the Tar Heels coach, probably thinking it would be a feel-good story about his redemption. That has decidedly not been the case. Last week, Hulu finally pulled the plug on the doc and came under criticism from sports media pundits for backing out once it became clear that it was no longer a puff piece or a recruiting tool for Belichick.

Turns out, however, that the struggles of the Tar Heels are not the reason Hulu pulled the plug, although it may be why Belichick did. It wasn’t Hulu’s decision after all. The 73-year-old Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, reportedly put the kibosh on the documentary because, they say, Hulu wanted to focus too much on their personal lives.

Amid a miserable season—where there were rumors that Hudson had been banned from the UNC facility and that she was basically managing Belichick—their lives were probably the most interesting thing about the planned documentary.

But I do love this statement to People from a, uh, “source” (ahem, Jordon Hudson cough cough): “Jordon, Bill and UNC all agreed that Hulu’s vision of the project was not in alignment with Hulu’s.”

What? Hulu agreed with Belichick and Hudson that their documentary wasn’t in alignment with their own vision? That makes zero sense.

Apparently, Hudson and Belichick refused to sign appearance releases, effectively ending the documentary, which reportedly had the temporary title of Untitled Bill and Jordon Project.

And so it goes. I understand why commentators were concerned that Hulu only wanted to glaze Belichick. Hulu is owned by Disney, which also owns ESPN, in which the NFL has a stake. But this is college football, and Hulu wanted Keeping Up with the Belichicks. Don’t blame Hulu for trying to show us a good time.
