I wrote last year about Harrison Ford’s role in Shrinking and how, after watching him on the big screen for the last 50 years, Bill Lawrence has done more than anyone to humanize him. To make him mortal. As I wrote at the time, Ford has always been larger than life, but Shrinking has made him feel achingly human. The vulnerability he has displayed in the comedy has given us a heartbreaking glimpse into a true icon’s mortality.
But it’s also given us a glimpse into his sense of humor. I’m not talking about the cantankerous sourpuss with a soft heart or the gravelly, badass one-liner guy. I’m talking about silly, fun, friendly Harrison Ford. In Shrinking, he’s no longer the rogue soloist. He’s part of the team. He’s in an ensemble. And by all accounts, he is loving it.
His real-life chemistry with co-star Jessica Williams was on full display last night when Williams called him out for eating during her SAG Awards segment. But just wait until the end when the two display something that looks an awful lot like genuine friendship. It’s only three seconds, but there is just something about that man’s authentic joy that is … joyful. It’s a pure, undistilled shot of bliss.
