Poor Malcolm. The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Malcolm In The Middle, Fox’s subversive sitcom about the dysfunctional family from hell, aired from 2000-2006. It launched Frankie Muniz’s career and made Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek household names. The show revolved around Malcolm and his genius-level IQ, trying to survive among a family of simple-minded delinquents and eccentrics. Malcolm walked so Young Sheldon could run.
In the revival, set to stream later this year on Hulu/Disney+, Malcolm has lived a happy, successful life after ghosting his family for 20 years. But dysfunction is magnetic. And the original series taught us that, despite animosity, aggravation, and occasional violence, Malcolm’s family (which was never given an official last name) was fiercely loyal and loved each other. So, when Malcolm is requested at his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary celebration, he obviously can’t say no.
It will be interesting to see how Lois and Hal have adapted to 21st-century sensibilities and how Malcolm’s brothers have managed to escape doing any jail time.
Chris Kennedy Masterson, Justin Berfield, and Emy Coligado are also returning in their roles for this four-part series. Erik Per Sullivan, who originally played the youngest son, Dewey, has been replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark so he can continue at college. Keeley Karsten (The Fabelmans) has been cast as Malcolm’s daughter. Vaughn Murrae (Before I Change My Mind) and Kiana Madeira (the Fear Street trilogy) are also set to star.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is set to begin streaming on Hulu/Disney+ on April 10th
