Earlier this week, reports started trickling in that HBO Chairman Casey Bloys heavily implied to Deadline that The Last of Us will pull the plug after Season 3 despite talk of the show expanding to a possible fourth season. This news didn’t come as a total surprise given the show became yet another battlefront in the never-ending “Woke Wars” — Oh no, it’s too much about girls now! Ewwww. — and diehard fans of the game griped about necessary changes for a TV adaptation. However, if this development seemed like bad news for Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin, guess again.
In an actually surprising move, HBO has tapped Mazin to turn yet another highly popular video game into a live-action series: Baldur’s Gate 3. If you know someone who’s played the award-winning game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, they’ve no doubt breathlessly sung its praises. Once again, Mazin has his work cut out for him.
Via Variety:
“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of ‘Baldur’s Gate 3,’ it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said in a statement. “I am a devoted fan of ‘D&D’ and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
As random as this may seem, HBO has continued to have success in the fantasy realm thanks to a little franchise called Game of Thrones. However, despite the heavy presence of dragons and ice zombies, that show has only lightly dabbled in fantasy trappings. Baldur’s Gate 3, on the other hand, will be a mad sprint into genre fare.
That said, Stranger Things has proved that you can’t go wrong betting on D&D. The final season did beaucoup numbers for Netflix, and I’m sure HBO’s future owner will love to roll the dice all over again. (Please tell me you saw what I did there. I have so very few of these moments.)
