I don’t know why this throwaway mention of the guy who officiated John Mulaney and Olivia Munn’s wedding thrills me to no end, but it does. On Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, Mulaney sat down to promote his Netflix talk show (which premieres tonight at 10 p.m.), and they discussed what he’s been up to since his last appearance on the show. He got married, and he had a kid — his second with Munn. They tied the knot last July.

Sam Waterston officiated.

“Well, our wedding was a very simple ceremony. We were married by Sam Waterston from Law & Order, The Killing Fields, and a co-star of Olivia’s on The Newsroom.”

Oh! And how did that come about? He “once said to Olivia, ‘If you ever get married, I’ll perform the ceremony.’”

“He did? Why did he say that?” Kimmel asked.

“I think it was chit-chat,” Mulaney said. “But, you know, you take people up on what they offer. Remember when you were like, ‘Hey, if you’ve ever fallen on hard times, you can live in my guest house’? Bam. There I was,” Mulaney said, referencing the time he stayed with Kimmel after rehab.

I love that Waterston, in between heavy-handed scenes on The Newsroom, casually told Munn he’d officiate her wedding, and a decade later, she was like, “Hey! Remember when you said you’d officiate my wedding? Well, I’m getting married.”

I bet he was a brilliant officiant, too. And now they can never get divorced because it would disappoint Sam Waterston, and the last thing I’d ever want to do is disappoint Sam Waterston. Also, it’s wild that Waterston did three seasons of The Newsroom and seven seasons of Grace and Frankie in between stints on Law & Order, from which he finally retired last year.

By the way, Mulaney also named his second daughter Mei June Mulaney. May. June.

They also talked at length about Mulaney appearing with Nick Kroll in a celebrity episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which I didn’t even realize was still on. And Kimmel hosts it? Mulaney expressed disappointment that he and Kroll crapped out on the $125,000 question (about Succession) after using Jon Stewart as their lifeline and even consulting Kimmel on the answer. For the record, I accurately guessed the answer here.

(And yes, I know, there’s a case that can be made that Jerry Orbach was the best Law & Order cast member. He’s number two in my heart. I was always a lawyer guy.)
