Sydney Sweeney Said Some Words About Being Called 'MAGA Barbie'

Seen here at a NASCAR race in November, which should really help the topic at hand, Sydney Sweeney has a new interview in Cosmopolitan where she’s once again confronted with the controversy stemming from her American Eagle campaign. This time around, Sydney is asked how she feels about people dubbing her “MAGA Barbie,” and to the surprise of no one, her thoughts on the matter are not very deep

Once you scroll past a billion photos of her new lingerie line coupled with the ol’ reliable playbook of “I’m doing this for female empowerment, you guys,” Cosmo tries its best to get Sydney to say something, anything about her core values. An understandable ask given everything happening at the moment, but don’t take my word for it. Just listen to the ultimate girlboss Martha Stewart.

Anyway, Syd remains convinced she can remain above the fray and argues that there’s no point in denouncing that she’s MAGA because no one will believe her. In fairness, she’s not wrong. The internet loves it some parasocial narratives. That being said, saying nothing probably would have been better than this approach.

There is a charged nickname that has stuck to you on social media: “MAGA Barbie.” I see it in Instagram comments constantly. How do you understand this label given that you’ve been private about your politics?

I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.

Why not correct it if it’s not true? Where is the line for you?

I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, “That’s not true,” they’ll come at me like, “You’re just saying that to look better.” There’s no winning. There’s never any winning. I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.

Sweeney goes on to say that she has “always led with love” and looks to Brad Pitt (yeah…) as an example of how to respect everybody. Cosmo takes one more stab by asking her if she’ll ever share her beliefs in the future, and that would be a hard no.

“I’m not a political person,” Sweeney said. “I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics. That’s not an area I’ve ever even imagined getting into. It’s not why I became who I am. I became an actor because I like to tell stories, but I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”

So, there you have it. Sydney Sweeney will never get political. She just wants love and respect for everyone, and there’s definitely not a glaring, four alarm example of hate happening that she should maybe counteract with all that love she keeps talking about. Nope, nothing off the top of her head.
