When we last checked on Gina Carano, she was riding high from her settlement with Disney and reportedly circling the lead in a new Vegas crime series made by actual Hollywood people and not Ben Shapiro. There’s been very little movement on that front, but don’t worry, it’s not like Gina’s out here making desperate cash grabs after running her career into the ground with pronoun jokes.
Just kidding! Guess who’s going to compete in her first MMA fight in at least a decade. (Don’t quote me on that, but I don’t care enough to check if that’s true. Feels solid though.) In a truly baffling move for all parties involved, Netflix has announced that Carano will face off against Ronda Rousey in the octagon hexagon this May.
Via THR:
“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us,” Carano said. “She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honor. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”
How badly is Gina about to get wrecked? Let’s look at the numbers. According to THR, Carano hasn’t fought in the ring since 2009 (Oh, hey, I was right!) where her MMA record was 7-1. Rousey, on the other hand, had her last fight in 2016 before exiting with a 12-2 record. She then transitioned to the WWE, which despite being fake, requires much more training and athleticism than showing up to Turning Points USA events like Gina has been doing.
As for their ages, Carano is 43 to Rousey’s 39. Is that a factor? Dude, I don’t watch sports. But in a sign of equality that will drive Carano up the wall — she hates that — their fight is already being compared to elderly boxing matches. We are not about to see two fighters in their prime, but it should be pretty humiliating if Rousey remembers how real fights work. Just don’t use any chairs, and John Cena probably won’t rise up out of the floor.
Or maybe he will. Again, don’t watch sports. No clue how they work.
