“You don’t hang out with your parents,” is what my wife often hits me with when we talk about whether or not our kids will want to be around us when they’re older. She’s not wrong! But there’s a lot more going on there, and there is a lot that I have tried to do differently as a parent to make sure my kids are more part of my life as adults than I am of my parents’ lives. I may be fighting a losing battle, but I certainly know some people who see their parents pretty regularly, even as adults.
I’ve done my best to lay the groundwork for that, sometimes to the point of exhaustion, but I think it will pay off in the long run. I always try to make myself available for games, toys, stories, and, of course, hugs. We talk about everything that my kids experience, even if that sometimes feels like pulling teeth (“What did you do at school today?” “Nothing.” Meanwhile, I find out they went to music class and had a fire drill).
Another aspect is getting them involved in the family business. And by that, I mean having them help me make little movies and sketches. We sing and dance and act together. One day, they may decide that they don’t want to do any of that stuff, and that will be fine, as long as they are happy. But if I establish a place for them to come and work and be creative, and they leave a big-money job to work with Dad instead?! That’s the dream, and Dwayne Johnson is living it.
The actor formerly known as The Rock has three children, and his oldest, Simone, joined the WWE in 2020. It was a big deal! Dwayne is a legend in the business, and she had big shoes to fill. After a few years, she was relegated to what is mostly a speaking role and did a perfectly fine job. When her contract came up in 2026, she chose not to renew it and soon after took a not-so-thinly veiled shot at her former employers. “And now that I can say this with my full chest, (middle finger emoji) ICE and that entire administration,” she wrote on X, seemingly confirming restrictions she faced within the company.
To say that WWE is cozy with the current Presidential administration would be an understatement, as the company’s Chief Content Officer has held numerous press conferences at the White House, and the Secretary of Education is Vince McMahon’s ex-wife. Hell, one of the company’s biggest stars, Roman Reigns, has spoken out in support of the President. Simone Johnson left and was finally able to say what she wanted to say, forcing fans to recon with the fact that other people in the company are likely being silenced. Now, she’s working with her dad.
“So I work under Seven Bucks Productions now, and I think my official title is junior executive, I believe, which is a fancy way to say that I get to read scripts and take notes and sit in on so many meetings with incredible writers and producers and directors,” she explained to WWE superstar Cody Rhodes on his podcast, according to f4wonline. “And I feel so lucky. There’s so much that I thought I knew about the entertainment industry, and then getting to learn so much more has been so eye-opening. And they’re not lying when they say making a movie is the hardest thing in the world. My gosh. Truly.”
The term nepo baby gets thrown around a lot, and it should, but I won’t pretend that I wouldn’t do the same thing given the chance. Hopefully, at least, I’d be a bit more self-aware. And plenty of stories about famous kids getting boosted by their parents are obnoxious, but Simone earns a pass from me because she gave a middle finger on her way out. She’s young and was following in her dad’s footsteps. She could have kept collecting that money, but she didn’t, so go make movies with your dad, Simone! Just… no more live-action remakes. Please.
