In the aftermath of the controversial UFC fight on the White House lawn that turned into a mask-off moment for Nate Bargatze, Joe Rogan revealed that he had to practically beg Shane Gillis to attend the event. It worked, but from the sound of things, he’s wishing he stuck to his gut and bailed.
During Gillis’ latest appearance on Rogan’s podcast, he implored Rogan to “stop bringing that up” when the discussion turned to the UFC fight. Turns out Gills went out of his way to keep a low profile during the Freedom 250 circus, but that didn’t stop photos of him being taken in the crowd. However, unlike Bargatze, Gillis took a hard pass on entering a VIP room where the evidence would be even worse.
“I said no way… f*** no, I knew those photos would be taken,” Gillis said. “I stood outside in the rain. I said I’m not getting my picture taken.”
Turns out, Gillis would very much like to separate his brand from the president to the point where he’s openly admitting that he didn’t even vote for the guy.

Comedian Mark Normand then called out Gillis, saying he did take a picture with the president a few years ago. The “Tires” actor said that was before the president made many controversial decisions in his second term.“That was pre-a lot of things,” Gillis said. “Back then, when I was taking that picture, I was like, this guy’s gonna release the [files], and no more wars. I like that.”
“Wasn’t killing Americans,” comedian Ari Shaffir quipped.
“Also, I still didn’t vote for him,” Gillis added.
To be clear, Gillis did way more than just play footsies with MAGA, so I’m in no way, shape, or form letting him off the hook for that. What am I doing is holding him up as another bellwether of how the tides are turning. From his hometown to his audience, it would behoove Gillis to continue holding the line that this administration is pure American power and a fist in the mouth to wokeness or whatever. Instead, he’s on Joe Rogan’s podcast openly saying that he didn’t want to be at the president’s birthday party because the president and everyone around him sucks now.
We’re talking about the Shane Gillis who was just making racist jokes at Kevin Hart’s roast, and even he’s trying to hide behind a binder Gretchen Witmer-style. That’s not nothing.
