My Sunday night ended similarly to a lot of folks. I was on my way home from a show and was met with some of the most horrific news I had seen in my life. My wife then texted me, trying not to bombard me with the devastating news I had already seen, instead asking if I had seen any mortifying news about a certain celebrity. I told her I had, and we hugged when I got home. An hour or two later, I put on The Princess Bride and let it lull me to sleep in a pleasing manner, as it had many times before.
Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were murdered in their homes on Sunday. It was incredibly terrible news that got worse with each passing detail. Because it wasn’t just that we found out about the bulk of the tragedy right away. First, we heard people their age were found in their home. Then it became clear that it was them. After that, we found out that they had been killed. Since then, it’s been alleged that the horrible act was committed by their own son.
It’s hard to fathom looking at these events as anything other than a tragedy. The worst possible thing imaginable happened to two genuinely good people. You can tell that’s the case because the outpouring of love and support has been immense. People are sharing the kindest stories and remembering the body of work that Rob left behind. We should all be so lucky as to live our lives in such a way that we are remembered so fondly, even if some deranged lunatic is trying to ruin it.
We try not to talk about the President around these parts, because our advertisers don’t like being associated with a sociopathic narcissist who became the leader of the country by activating everyone’s bigoted family members, like Russia waking up the Winter Soldier. Trump posted an abhorrent screed about Reiner on Truth Social that is somehow worse than anything he’s ever posted while also being the logical next step for his terribleness. Luckily, there are people in the world like Seth Meyers to counter that terribleness.
Meyers took a moment to remember Rob and Michele on his show last night. I’ll say right off the bat, if you’re someone who gets emotional when you see other people get emotional, this will be a hard watch, but it is worth it. The longtime host admits that he did not get to know Reiner well, but speaks about him with such grace and compassion that you can feel it in your bones. One of the most striking aspects is hearing him mention how Reiner appeared on his show for the first time just two months ago, highlighting life’s fragility.
The SNL alum also takes time to rebuke Trump’s hateful spew, lamenting the fact that we don’t have a leader who can set a good example. That’s what we need in moments like this, and not only do we not have it, but we have someone actively stoking the flames instead. It is a powerful and emotional watch, and a fitting tribute for such wonderful people.
