Detroiters was a criminally underrated sitcom with a short life. It starred Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson as two bumbling but good-hearted ad men in Detroit. While it may not have lasted long, its jokes go on forever. One I often think of involves Tim, who gets angry when a potential client jokes, “To our wives and girlfriends… may they never meet!” Tim is onboard initially, but then rightfully snaps. “You know, I have to say something. I didn’t particularly like that joke,” Tim declares. “I love my wife, I respect her. And before I tell a joke, I like to ask myself, ‘If she was sitting right next to me, would I tell this joke?’ That comment crossed the line, and I don’t think it was very funny.”

It’s a hilarious moment in the show, and it shows Tim standing up for his wife in a genuinely sweet way. Robinson’s silly delivery makes it even better. You find yourself happily on Tim’s side. Cause let’s be honest, only the worst dudes alive rag on their wives when they aren’t around. It’s this gross shorthand that s***ty dudes trade in. If you want to make fun of your wife, you should have to do it in front of hundreds of thousands of people, because you were forced to be Michael Che, and your wife should have a chance to defend herself.

That incredibly niche example is what Colin Jost is going through. Jost and Che have been behind the “Weekend Update” desk at Saturday Night Live for 11 years. They’ve developed a tradition over that decade where, once a year, they will write jokes for each other that they don’t get to see ahead of time. Then, they will read them live on air, constantly breaking. The segment usually ends up being some of the best stuff to come out of the season (and that isn’t a knock at everything else). However, in the most recent iteration, Che… pushed the envelope.

Michael Che will often force Jost to joke about his famous wife, Scarlett Johansson. The Avengers star was on hand for the most recent joke off, where Jost joked about her post-birth vagina. “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu,” Jost read during the show. “But I ain’t trippin’. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.” Scarlett was aghast, Jost could barely keep it together, and Che was giggling with glee. But will Johansson have her revenge?

Scarlett will be hosting this year’s SNL finale, which has already got people assuming it will be Jost’s last. Eleven years is a long time to be on SNL, unless you’re Kenan Thompson. But Jost’s exit isn’t the only rumor now surrounding the finale. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson teased serving Che his just desserts. “I had all these cameras on me. I didn’t expect the setup to be like that,” Johansson explained, reminiscing about the … roast beef joke. “I was like, ‘Wow, you really are seventh-, eighth-grade boys.’ ” But interviewer David Canfield says that Scarlett then broke into a smile. “I feel like it’s almost my responsibility to come up with some way to burn Michael back,” she grinned. “Retaliation, I’d say, should be expected. Others on the show could support this desire. Know what I mean?”

I love that she’s threatening him the way a mob boss would. “Wouldn’t it be nice if something was to happen to yous?!” She also seems to suggest that other people on the show have her back, so her ability to exact revenge will have a lot of support. I don’t know what she could do, but this tease just turned SNL’s season finale into appointment television.
