The long-awaited and highly anticipated Practical Magic 2 is beginning to look more like a woman-led, bewitching action/adventure movie than the sweet but spooky original. Danish director Susanne Bier, who previously directed Sandra Bullock in Bird Box, has brought a dark edginess to the project that can’t be buried in the rose garden.
Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing (and her hats?) all return as the magical Owens women in Practical Magic 2. Two generations quietly living their witchy lives when the family curse comes back to haunt Sally’s (Bullock) daughter (Joey King). With the impetuousness of youth and the powers of an untrained witch, she runs off to put an end to the curse all on her own.
It’s up to the sisters to gather allies (hellooooo Lee Pace) and magical forces along the way, in hopes of ending the curse that brings nothing but tragedy to their family.
Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Blue Beetle’s Xolo Maridueña, and Star City’s Solly McLeod also star in the sequel that’s set twenty-five years after Practical Magic.
Good or bad, I’m just glad Nicole Kidman is back to red hair.
Practical Magic 2 opens in theaters on September 11th.
