It finally feels like the dust has settled on The Odyssey. For months, the film dominated many conversations (and drew plenty of clicks), and to say it has done well for itself would be an understatement. It worked to such an extent that right-wing losers who cried foul because it dared to cast people they don’t like have even begun tying themselves in knots trying to take credit for its success. It was a big ol’ hit, and it’s even managed to dethrone a comic book movie.
I still don’t think the age of the comic book movie is over, but it is certainly on its way out. Yes, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made an insane amount of money, but there probably won’t be three of those this year like there once were. But also, that could be undone come December if Doomsday does the kind of business Marvel is hoping for. We’ll see! For now, we know at least that The Odyssey is surpassing Deadpool Ampersand Wolverine, two movies I never expected to discuss in the same sentence.
Christopher Nolan’s epic adventure film has grossed $1.352 billion globally, which is better than the MCU’s meta-lega-sequel’s $1.338 billion. Unless Marvel plans on rereleasing the film at some point with a deleted scene that it touts as “new footage,” it’s unlikely to pass The Odyssey. But the Deadpool flick was also recently listed as suggested viewing to lay the groundwork for Avengers: Doomsday, so I won’t completely count that out either.
Regardless, Ryan Reynolds took to The Everything App to congratulate The Odyssey. He posted a video splicing together footage from The Odyssey and footage from Deadpool Ampersand Wolverine that shows the two characters fighting… inside of a Honda Odyssey. It’s a funny little nod, even if I remember being absolutely exhausted by that point in the movie (They already fought! Do something else!). But could Deadpool and Wolverine get some revenge on The Odyssey?
While it hasn’t been one hundred percent confirmed that the two characters would appear in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel has recently released a list of films to watch as preparation for Doomsday, and the buddy hero film is on there, which makes sense, given its ties to the FOX X-Men films, which we know will be a part of the upcoming film. Additionally, Jackman appeared in a video promoting the film at D23, with Reynolds talking to him off-camera.
Doomsday certainly isn’t rated R, so it won’t come directly for that throne from the Odyssey, but it could still end up making buttloads of money (if Marvel has its way). If that’s the case, expect another tongue-in-cheek response from Reynolds, maybe something about The Prestige this time.
