Renewals and Cancellations: 'The Bachelor,' 'Farmhouse Fixer,' 'Ransom Canyon'

Good morning, and welcome to the slowest news week of the year — outside of the week between Christmas and New Year’s. We do have a few cancellations and renewals to report on, however. For instance, after a short hiatus, ABC is bringing back The Bachelor for a 30th season, though it will do so with a new showrunner. Scott Teti, who ran Bachelor in Paradise, will take over from Claire Freeland and Bennett Graebner, who left back in March over toxic workplace allegations. Toxic workplace? A dating show? No!

(Related, but Ariana Madix—the host of Love Island—is dealing not necessarily with a toxic workplace, but toxic fans. I do not watch dating shows, but even if I did, I would not watch Love Island because there are 37 episodes a season and it airs, like, 5 episodes a week.)

Elsewhere, NBC has pulled the plug on Grosse Pointe Garden Society after one season. Reviews weren’t particularly good for the series, but you hate to see Melissa Fumero and AnnaSophia Robb lose their jobs. Unfortunately, I think there were just too many unnecessary Es in the title.

There are mixed reports on the cancellation of Doctor Odyssey. The holding contracts for the actors have run out, but it hasn’t been formally canceled, and Ryan Murphy is still exploring his options. If the series had continued to be as good as it was before its winter hiatus, I’d be bummed. As it is, Joshua Jackson and Phillipa Soo can probably find better gigs elsewhere.

Netflix has picked up another season of Ransom Canyon, one of its two popular Yellowstone-ish soaps. The Waterfront is much better, but Ransom Canyon is also stupidly watchable, even if it is complete trash.

Now that Discovery is parting ways with HBO, the former is clearly cutting costs as it prepares to spin off into a dying part of the company. It has meant HGTV cutting four of its series: Married to Real Estate, Bargain Block, Izzy Does It, and Farmhouse Fixer.

I’m actually bummed about the latter, wherein New Kids on the Block member Jonathan Knight renovates New England farmhouses. I live in a New England farmhouse myself and have done some light renovations (Producer Seth helped me build a mudroom a couple of years ago); I’ve found Farmhouse Fixer to be a fun comfort show on occasion. Jonathan Knight was a great host, too, and his brother, Jordan Knight, occasionally joined the proceedings. I grew up in the NKOTB era, so it was kind of neat to see them in a different setting.
