In his Covid pandemic-era book, ‘The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows’—an attempt at creating a number of English neologisms—writer John Koening introduced the world to the word ‘sonder’, a term designed to describe the feeling you have when you realize every person you see is the center of their own complex life tapestry the same way that you are in yours. One of my favorite things to do is to just chill somewhere in public—the park, a cafe, a bar—with a book, alternating between reading and people watching/listening, letting that feeling wash over me. It’s liberating, and I couldn’t help but think of it when reading today’s AskReddit thread, in Reddit asks the question: ‘What’s one conversation you overheard that lives rent-free in your head?’ You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights:
