Thanks to his memoir, John Stamos has been getting a surprising amount of mileage out of milking his marriage to Rebecca Romijn. In fairness, Stamos has been candid about his failings, namely admitting that their relationship went south when her career took off while his floundered post-Full House. Romijn made the jump from model to blockbuster actress while Stamos… was on ER? I honestly don’t know or care.
Anyway, there was apparently another factor at play in their doomed relationship: Romijn thought Stamos was something of an idiot, and man, was she right. We’ll get to that in a bit.
“There was a relationship that I had that, she said she thought — she said I was stupid or said I wasn’t smart enough to be around her people and stuff,” Stamos told Bill Maher on a recent episode of Club Random. “But I was like, I’m not stupid. And I really buckled down. But I was, you know, not super articulate in the political world. I didn’t grow up with politics in my family.”
OK, so John Stamos wasn’t big on politics in the late ’90s. Christ, that still happens today while there’s an administration literally bulldozing the White House as its secret police snatch people off the street. Not everyone can handle taking information like that to the dome 24/7. As long as guys like Stamos don’t turn to an absolute clown for guidance, things will eventually work their way out. (You see where this is going, don’t you?)
Via The Daily Beast, emphasis mine:
Stamos said he got up to speed by soaking up Maher’s content. “I learned everything from you,” he told the host, “I’ve read your book. I love — from the beginning, you just lay it out so simple.” Stamos, who has remained apolitical over the years, also told Maher, “You are a genius, you are my North Star.”
“My wife didn’t think I was smart enough to talk to her friends about politics, so I just repeated what Bill Maher said on TV,” has to be a self-own for the ages. If Rebecca Romijn is reading this, what does complete and total vindication feel like? Because I bet it’s fantastic. Seriously, take a bow.
