Amazon has spent nearly ten billion dollars to acquire and control any future James Bond films. It’s a staggering number, that I admit I balked at at first. Yes, Bond is an international commodity who is well known, but is he worth billions of dollars? Do people need more adventures of the martini-sipping misogynist so badly that Amazon felt the need to lockdown that cash cow before it got away? I would think no, but the amount of stories that make the news about Bond films and the actors who have and who could star in them is staggering.
I’m often on the lookout for topics that are timely and interesting so I can give my perspective on them (you can blame Dustin for keeping me around). James Bond movies were huge in my house growing up, thanks in part to the popularity of Goldeneye on N64. Then, MGM began re-releasing the films on VHS, which were readily available at Hollywood Video. When I got to high school, Daniel Craig was introduced in my favorite Bond film (and one of my favorite movies period). I like Bond and yet I don’t understand why people go so crazy for him.
If I had to guess, there’s an allure to the male population because Bond represents, as Daniel Craig has pointed out, a “laughable” masculinity. He’s always drinking, punching dudes, and kissing ladies (even if they don’t want to). The character always knows what to say and can escape danger at a moment’s notice. Guys can even cosplay as Bond without looking “silly.” So, it stands to reason that the male population, especially those online, are very particular about who should play Bond next.
Jeff Bezos did some internet poll after securing the creative rights to Bond asking people who they wanted to see don the tux. Henry Cavill won that poll. We’ll see if the studio goes with that choice (I hope not for … several reasons). Since fans are so passionate about it and Amazon seems to be starting from scratch, folks are racking their brains and asking everyone who should play the next Bond. Pierce Brosnan has a different actor in mind: Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
“I think he would be very good,” Brosnan said of Taylor-Johnson to Yahoo Entertainment. “I cast him in one of the movies I made a long time ago called The Greatest, actually, and he played ‘the greatest.’” Having a good working relationship with someone is a great reason to pick them, and it also points out an advantage Taylor-Johnson has: he’s been at this awhile (The Greatest came out in 2009). “This young man came on the set and took the space, filled the space with passion and energy,” Brosnan elaborated. “So yeah, I think if he wished it, wanted it and got it, he would be great.”
I’ve only seen Taylor-Johnson in a handful of things. But, before Casino Royale, I hadn’t seen Daniel Craig in anything, and he’s my favorite Bond. So, I’d be open to whatever Taylor-Johnson brings. I enjoyed Cavill’s Superman, but I’ve seen him in enough things to know I wouldn’t want him as the famed 00 agent. I assume that Jeff Bezos is currently reading this article and taking notes (Hey, Jeff). So, we’ll see who Amazon eventually goes with. If it’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson, they likely did so because I said I was fine with it, not Pierce Brosnan.
