Over the past year, I’ve found myself buying both a record player and a CD player. I’d never owned the former, though as a music fanatic I’ve always wanted one, and integrating it into my routine has been one of the great recent joys of my life. That joy was very much expected. The latter, on the other hand, I’ve owned many of over the years, and I bought one again for the more utilitarian reason of increasing my physical media storage, not expecting for it to bring much excitement at all—but it did! With that CD player arrived so many thrills, an atavistic resurgence linked to handling the discs themselves, an ecstatic grounding in the physical and real, and a very particular skill I hadn’t thought about in what felt like an age of elves and men: Ripping CDs. I felt instantly transported, and, like Gandalf, I strayed out of thought and time, stars wheeling overhead and everyday being as long as a life-age of the earth. Reddit had this topic on its mind the other day when it asked the question: ‘People born before 2000, what trivial skill do you have that no one uses anymore?’ You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights
