Oscar night has come and gone, and it was a pretty joyous occasion. Sinners got lots of love (though, arguably, not as much as it should have). I didn’t have to see Kevin O’Leary or his garish outfit until after the ceremony, when it had been reduced to meme form. Conan O’Brien was in rare form, taking shots that made it seem like he didn’t care if he returned next year (and, given the switch to YouTube, likely safely assumed that he wouldn’t), and ragging on Timothee Chalamet. And the whole night kicked off with an exciting win by Amy Madigan.
Madigan was phenomenal in Weapons as a horrifying (and almost more garish than O’Leary) witch. It was a stunning performance that stole the film and turned it in a completely different direction. People responded to it with the excitement it deserved, and it still felt like a bit of a long shot in terms of her actually taking home the trophy. But, she won, we got to see her reaction in real time, and be reminded that she’s married to Ed Harris, and everyone got up to cheer, even her competition, Teyana Taylor, which people apparently thought was weird.
This could easily be one of those things for people who are terminally online. Nobody I know was criticizing Teyana Taylor for being full of joy and excitement for pretty much the whole night. But, unsurprisingly, someone on Twitter shared a clip of Madigan winning, which sees Taylor quickly stand up to applaud in response. The Twitter user wrote, “I knew from the first hour something was off.” This could just be a general reaction to the fact that Sinners didn’t get as many wins as people hoped (Wunmi Mosaku lost to Madigan as well), but, regardless, Teyana Taylor wasn’t having it.
“The world holds so much misery that miserable hearts forget the face of happiness,” Taylor wrote in response. “They grow comfortable being sore losers, so when they see real sportsmanship it unsettles them! like holy water touching a demon. Because clapping for someone else’s victory requires something many people never learned…how to win with grace & pure joy, and how to lose with grace, chin up & dignity.” She’s right, ya know! I’m not sure if the person was addressing her response directly, but she clearly felt strongly enough to say something.
There are clips of Taylor being excited the whole night. It’s pretty infectious and lovely to see in a world of nonsense. The night was about celebration, not failure. So, let’s focus on that, which was perfectly encapsulated by Michael B. Jordan, Jessie Buckley, and Amy Madigan getting in a photobooth together.
