Things change when you get older. Candy starts to taste too sweet (a travesty). Your knees may start to buckle just from walking up a flight of stairs. It becomes harder to lose weight and eercise and hell, when are you going to find the time for either anyway? There are also… other things you don’t have time for. You may want to, but life and age get in the way, and suddenly, you find yourself going months at a time without a… “playdate.”
And I mean that in the literal sense. Toy Story 3 illustrates getting older perfectly, as we get to see Andy give all of his titular toys to a young girl named Bonnie. But Andy isn’t the only one feeling the sting of old age. Toy Story 4 sees Woody take a similar journey, where he decides to live free among the carnival toys as opposed to doing his “job” of making children happy. It’s basically a “get used to retirement” movie, something I’m still kind of flabbergasted by in a good way.
But you can’t keep a good Woody down. A new trailer for Toy Story 5 just dropped, and it confirms that Woody will be standing tall with his friends once more. It looks like the TV cowboy has been helping lost toys in the years since the last film (though given Bonnie’s age, it’s likely that a lot less time has passed in the universe). He’s then summoned by his friends when Bonnie is given a new tablet that seemingly has malevolent intentions to do everything for her new owner.
As a father to twin almost-five-year-olds, I’m pretty psyched for this. First and foremost, this franchise gets the benefit of the doubt from me. I enjoyed the fourth film much more than I expected, even though I didn’t think it was necessary. While that movie did tackle a seemingly more existential question than “Is technology bad for kids?” I’ve got hopes that this one will still pack an emotional punch, especially because it seems to focus so much on Jesse.
Woody’s old friend was introduced in the second film with a tragic backstory based on abandonment. This trailer kicks off with her living her best life and officiating a wedding for Forky and the hilariously named Karen Beverly (a knife person). But Jesse could be abandoned yet again for a whole new reason, and having to deal with that trauma for a second time could be a solid emotional anchor. I don’t specifically remember how they handle her being abandoned in the third film, but I haven’t watched it in a while, as I haven’t felt the need to sob uncontrollably as of late.
While I would have liked to see Conan O’Brien’s character in this trailer, I have a feeling that they’re waiting because he may be more mischievous than expected. They lead hard in this trailer with Lilypad (the tablet) being an antagonist, but I have a feeling she’ll end up more friend than foe. Maybe ‘ol Conan, who is also playing some kind of tech named SmartyPants, will end up being some sort of mastermind. Or it will just be a stark warning that tablets aren’t for kids. I’ll be good with either.
