Mike Flanagan Swears His 'The Mist' Movie Won’t Be a 'Retread' (OK, How?)

Mike Flanagan made waves earlier in the month when news broke that he’s adapting yet another Stephen King story. However, this time, he’d be tackling a rare gem: The Mist. What makes it so rare? Well, it already has a pretty great movie, which is hardly ever the case with King’s work. I’m a big believer that the book is always better than the movie. Multiply that by 100 for ol’ Steve-arino.

Anyway, there’s been understandable concern about Flanagan taking a stab at The Mist considering Frank Darabont’s 2007 adaptation was not only faithful, but absolutely stuck the landing. If you didn’t know that ending was coming, which I sure didn’t, it hits like a freaking sledgehammer. In short, Flanagan has an uphill battle trying to pull that rabbit out of the hat again, and apparently, he has a plan.

The filmmaker has been fielding fan questions on Bluesky, and here’s what he said when asked about inevitable comparisons of his ending and Darabont’s: “I learned a long ago never to try to predict what the fans will or won’t argue about (everybody needs to relax, frankly; I just saw a whole chain of people foaming at the mouth over fan-made AI slop posters for The Exorcist)… but yeah, this isn’t a retread. The differences start page 1.”

Turns out, Flanagan is really big on claiming his stab at The Mist won’t be a retread. “I love Darabont’s film,” he responded to another user. “And there’s zero point in remaking it. Which is why I’m going in a different direction.”

“The Mist is going to be great. If there wasn’t an excellent answer to ‘why,’ I wouldn’t do it,” Flanagan assured another fan.

While that sounds well and good, at the end of the day, Mike Flanagan is still mining the same Stephen King novella that Frank Darabont did in 2007. Granted, I notice a lot of the wording around this project specifically involves the phrasing “a new adaptation of The Mist” instead of “remake,” but who are we kidding here?

Are you telling the story about a mysterious fog that covers a town in Maine with terrifying results? Congratulations, we’ve tread this ground before.
