When it comes to brand awareness, Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t need any help. A barely 30 minute preview on Netflix just put up massive numbers, and every video game release is steering clear of November. It’s the gaming event of the year. I’m stupidly hyped for it, and I couldn’t even tell you why. I didn’t even finish the last one!
Anyway, GTA VI is already sitting pretty, but the Miami-Dade sheriff’s department just dropped a glorious gift in its lap by getting mad about the game. Reportedly, Miami Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reached out to Rockstar, the makers of GTA, to help the cash-strapped city market some real-life events, which is a smart idea. Well, Republican Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz did not like that one bit and made sure to put it in the newspaper that she’s mad.
Via The Miami Herald:
“Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity,” Cordero-Stutz said in a statement. “Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office work every single day to prevent.”
In fairness, yes, GTA VI is about committing rampant crime and reckless driving at the most gratuitous levels possible. Those are things that cops hate in real life and rightly so. However, it’s a video game. Attempts to link them to real world violence have been a dead end in study after study.
Granted, Republican weirdos hate this game because it dares to have a female character, who’s Latina to boot (extremely ironic in this case), but they have yet to meet a topic they won’t Streisand Effect into the sun. More specifically, there’s probably going to be a chart inside Rockstar Studios that will show GTA sales spiking because of statement above. I mean, my God, “The cops don’t want you to play this game” is manna from Heaven.
I don’t own Rockstar stock, or any stock because I’m poor, but I should probably remedy that. Where’s my wallet?
