I’ve got a big weekend ahead of me, and I could not be more excited. On Saturday, my family and I are making a little horror-comedy movie. It’s a short film about me trying to sell my soul, and everybody’s got little parts to help their dad/husband keep living out his dreams. My wife and I were testing one of the more complicated shots the other night, and the whole thing made me feel like I was walking on air, because, while I’ve worked on creative things with my wife before, it’s been too damn long.
My creative life has been mostly separate from my family life, for one reason or another, but I want it all, dammit. When I’m on a set, running around, and trying to solve problems, I feel alive in a way no other activity does. Even though it can be a stressful environment, I feel at peace as my brain activates my body in a way that frees me from distractions. There is only the project at hand, and how we are going to figure it out (without being jerks). But I can get feelings that are just as strong by being with my family.
When we are all together and having fun, even if it’s just eating dinner, nothing else matters, and everything makes sense. I see the smiles on my family’s faces and know I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do, because every decision I’ve made in my life has led me to this level of happiness I never thought I’d be allowed to achieve. So, I wrote a little black horror comedy about it, and we’re making it this weekend, so I get to combine two of the greatest loves of my life.
All that is to say, I understand why Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have teamed up with their kids, Sosie and Travis, to make a horror movie called Family Movie, which debuted at the Bentonville Film Festival, according to Deadline. While my kids are a lot younger (and won’t even be fully seen onscreen), Sosie and Travis are grown up folks, so they are front and center in the new film that is being described as “Hilarious and bloddy.”
Here’s the breakdown from Deadline:
“The twisted tale sees Bacon playing Jack Smith, a schlock horror film director trying to make a final low-budget film, Blood Moon, starring his wife Ellen (Kyra Sedgwick) and daughter Ula (Sosie Bacon), with production assistance from sound man and Muay Thai kickboxer son Trent (Travis Bacon). The family project is interrupted by the appearance of a corpse - that of an annoying neighbor (played by John Carroll Lynch) with a habit of buzzing his woodchipper in the middle of the family’s filmmaking efforts.”
Y’all got John Carroll Lynch in this thing, too?! Sign me up! Also, the Bacons all dive into how much they loved working and creating the movie together, and that kind of background hopefully makes for a fun ride (it sure sounds like one). They want to get the film into theaters, and you’d hope that would be a no-brainer, given horror’s continued success at the box office, but they have no updates on that front. Regardless of where it ends up, I’ll definitely be watching.
