It’s difficult to explain the rage I have felt building inside of me for the last month. I’m sure that some of you have felt it as well. I’ve certainly experienced anger at current events before, but things have hit a tipping point that I do not think we can return from. My children’s future feels uncertain thanks to the actions of spineless, hateful cowards. Every moment I’m awake, I’m a moment away from anxiety weighing on me like a heavy sweater in warm weather. To push through it in a way that makes me feel happy enough to play with those children and shield them from what is going on, I have to try my best to shut things out sometimes.
I’ve certainly stayed up to date on what is going on. I haven’t been hiding my head in the sand. It’s just that I need a little break now and then, and even that’s difficult. Like, I’m psyched to watch the Royal Rumble with my kids tomorrow because it’s one of my favorite events in wrestling and will be on at 1 PM. However, it only has that early start time because it is being hosted in Saudi Arabia, where female wrestlers must have their outfits approved in advance to ensure they don’t show too much skin.
So, if I can find something that just lets me smile for six minutes, I’m going to grab onto it as tightly as I can. Sometimes, that will take the form of a snuggle with one of my very sweet children. Today, it manifested as a delightful interview between Jimmy Kimmel and Kermit the Frog. The Muppet is currently on a press tour to promote the return of his signature show via a primetime special next week (which will hopefully result in a whole new era of Muppet Show goodness).
Kimmel is the perfect host to interview Kermit because he genuinely treats him like he’s… real. It’s also part of why he works so well interviewing children. The guy just seems to be having a blast, and it’s pretty infectious. He’s laughing at Kermit’s corny jokes, gets caught off guard when one of them is accompanied by a rimshot, and it was a real joy to watch. Also, whoever decided the camera placement did a bang-up job, as Kermit feels like he could just move around the space freely.
I love the Muppets and can’t wait to show this special to my kids next week. They’ve been on a Muppet Show kick lately, and I could not be happier about that. Then, we’ll probably play some video games and eat snacks. Of course, we can’t go to bed without reading a couple of chapters from The Wizard of Oz (we’ve run out of Goosebumps books). Then, I’ll sing to them and give them kisses before they go to bed, and during those moments, I can pretend the world isn’t actively on fire.
