Thanks to comedian Akilah Hughes spilling a whole lot of thinly-veiled tea, Keegan-Michael Key’s wife, Elle Key, has become a viral topic as fans of Key & Peele now have some seemingly solid answers for why the comedy duo no longer work together.

While Jordan Peele evolved into a horror movie auteur, Key has been grinding it out in commercials and still landing bit roles in major motion pictures. Most recently, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie where he reprised his role as Toad. What movies has Key not appeared in? Any one of the ones directed by Peele.

According to Hughes, Peele’s wife, Chelsea Peretti, does not care for Elle one bit and has reportedly gone so far as to compare her to Phil Hartman’s wife. (Yikes.) Peretti reportedly warned Hughes that Elle has been a wrecking ball to Key’s career, which played out as her involvement torpedoed Hughes’ comedy show that she was developing with Keegan.

Well, apparently, Elle Key is fighting back. In a new report from TMZ, “multiple sources connected to KMK and Elle” have come forward to call Hughes’ claims “outlandish and fabricated.” Oh, so this whole thing was about Key’s wife? Way to confirm that one. We’re off to a great start.

As for Akilah’s other claiming during her set … that Elle’s been a wedge between the comedy duo — both Jordan and Keegan-Michael have said they remain friends, even though they, obviously, don’t get to hang as much as their “Key and Peele” days.

It might also be hard for some to square the accusation Elle’s been harmful to her husband’s career, when the dude returned to star in this spring’s blockbuster ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie sequel … a project Akilah, at least, considers silly.

Let’s take this one at a time. To back up the claim that “they remain friends,” TMZ links to a January 2025 PEOPLE article that quotes Keegan-Michael Key and only Keegan-Michael Key. There’s not a single comment from Jordan Peele, which now feels very telling in light of recent events.

As for starring in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, you know what? That’s not nothing. It’s easy to sneer that it’s just voiceover work for IP slop, but that had to be a solid check to work with an admittedly great cast. So, maybe Elle isn’t completely sandbagging Key’s career as he remains a reliable hired gun. Collaborating with him creatively, though? That probably became even more of an uphill battle, and I wouldn’t expect to see Key in one of Peele’s movies anytime soon.
