Is 'And Just Like That' Going To Write Out Evan Handler's Harry?

About two-and-a-half years ago, in writing about Jon Batiste and Suleika Jaouad’s American Symphony and Jaouad’s struggles with leukemia, I also mentioned And Just Like That …/Sex and the City star Evan Handler, who had leukemia, was treated for it, relapsed, and ultimately underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant decades ago.

Handler sent a very unexpected and incredibly kind email that has genuinely done more than anything else in the last several years to ease the anxieties I had surrounding my son’s diagnosis and treatment (not because he’s an actor, but because he’s gone through the experience). I haven’t replied to it yet because I’m a painfully superstitious person, and I somehow convinced myself that I needed to wait until 2026 to respond — when my kid will (knock on wood) be five years cancer-free. (I also have a rubber bracelet that I started wearing the day my son was diagnosed. It’s literally turned green, but I can’t bring myself to take it off, despite my son’s insistence.)

All of which is to say: Of all the characters on And Just Like That to give a cancer storyline to, I cannot believe they chose Evan Handler’s Harry Goldenblatt. It’s a real kick in the ass. Granted, it’s prostate cancer, and the prognosis for Harry is excellent, so the storyline is — so far — mostly played for comedy and to give anxiety to Harry’s wife, Charlotte (Kristin Davis). But the thought that the series might kill off Harry sent me into a minor tailspin.

Thankfully, creator/writer Michael Patrick King has assured us, via The Wrap, that Harry is going to be OK. The storyline is meant more to illustrate the toll a cancer diagnosis can take on a loved one or caregiver, which is very real, though still probably not as stressful as actually having cancer. Even prostate cancer, which has resulted for poor Harry in a bout of erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence at a very inopportune time.

“Do you think I’m going to kill Harry?” Michael Patrick King joked with The Wrap. He best not, because I would lead the riot that would ensue.

It’s also worth noting this week that, after several episodes that continued to deal with Carrie’s long-distance relationship with Aidan, she finally got a worthwhile storyline this week, even if it was just about the headache her high heels have on her downstairs neighbor.
