We’ve all dealt with people in power who we wish weren’t. Then, we’ve celebrated when those people lose that power in any way, shape, or form. An early example could be having a teacher you don’t like, only to find them replaced by a substitute. Sometimes, that could feel like a day off or a much-needed change of pace. Other times, it could be even worse.
It’s a classic be careful what you wish for scenario, and I find myself in it right now. I’ve had a pretty good year so far, concerning people I want to lose power. NYC Mayor Eric Adams dropped his re-election bid. And, in that case, he has a guy with “cool substitute teacher” vibes (and so much more) leading the charge to replace him. We could end up with a creepy uncle instead, but that’s looking less and less likely.
The prospects of Adams being replaced by someone significantly better should give me enough hope to push through the next year. Then, I read that David Zaslav may be out at Warner Bros., and I was too busy dancing to read the beginning of the headline. Surely, that could only be good news! The man shelved finished movies for tax write-offs. He got rid of the name HBO, realized it was a mistake, and came crawling back.
There has been a consistent downside to David Zaslav being in power at Warner Bros. Discovery Pizza Hut, or whatever it is currently called. That said, I won’t act like things I love haven’t emerged from the company like sunflowers sprouting through concrete. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is one of my favorite movies from this year. James Gunn is leading my beloved DCU into an exciting new direction.
Regardless, I was so excited to see that there could be a world where David Zaslav no longer holds power that I ignored the larger red flag: it may happen because David Ellison’s Paramount would be purchasing Warner Bros. Deadline is reporting that, should that occur, there’s no room at the company for Zaslav. The report also suggests that the current CEO was attempting to attract other companies like Netflix to purchase Warner Bros., so he could have a leadership position.
If you aren’t familiar with David Ellison, congratulations! He’s the billionaire son of billionaire Larry Ellison (ain’t that neat). He led the charge of the Skydance/Paramount merger, and would now like to add another media company to his potential monopoly. So far, he likely played a role in Stephen Colbert’s firing and put Bari Weiss in charge of CBS News. Nothing good!
I’m no fan of David Zaslav, but valuable things have been created under his watch. Maybe that could be the same with whoever Ellison puts in charge, but I doubt it. At this rate, it will end up being someone like Ben Shapiro because he’s a failed screenwriter. It will be about pushing an agenda. Last Week Tonight won’t be renewed, and Superman will salute the military onscreen every ten minutes in Man of Tomorrow. It’ll be bad, y’all. Real bad.
