My kids were born in 2021, and while they didn’t move for a while, leaving my wife and me sitting around with little to do except make sure they didn’t die, we also weren’t sleeping much. So, while we had plenty of time to catch up on movies or try to be abreast of current events, we were mostly watching cooking shows or other easily digestible things. Jeopardy was a big part of that.
We would tune in every night like clockwork, excited to guess along with some of our favorite contestants. Then, a search began for Alex Trebek’s replacement, and it all seemed pretty run-of-the-mill. There were several people of note up for the job, and then, out of nowhere, it was revealed that a producer on the show named Michael Richards would be potentially taking over, and everyone said, “Who?” Hell, you might even be saying that now.
Richards had appeared on the show several times that year, but that didn’t stop people from being fundamentally confused by what was happening, especially when there were much better candidates up for the gig (cough LeVar Burton cough). However, to no one’s surprise, it turned out that Richards had been working behind the scenes to stack the deck in his favor; his coup failed, and he stepped down.
Years later, Richards would end up joining The Daily Wire as their president, a move that almost makes too much sense given their penchant for “rescuing” people from cancellation, often proudly bragging like they’ve discovered some hidden gem that society foolishly tossed aside. While the company has had to lay off a decent percentage of its staff during Richards’ tenure, he has now been named CEO of the company.
The last CEO, Caleb Robinson, quit yesterday, and in his resignation letter announced that Richards would be taking over (and he also doubled down on the idea that the company has millions of followers. Sure, Jan.). I believe the next movie the Daily Wire will release is an action film starring Jonathan Majors. With Richards now in charge, he can be a kind of Nick Fury for this assembled team of a**holes. The universe isn’t always fair, but sometimes, it makes a whole lotta sense.
