Ezra Miller’s Back, and Yep, Still a Weirdo

Ezra Miller did a lot of bizarre things several years ago ahead of the disastrous release of The Flash — they assaulted a woman in Iceland; they were arrested at a karaoke bar; their hostel hosts in Hawaii had to take out a restraining order against them; a Massachusetts family took out a prevention of harassment order after Miller allegedly brandished a firearm at their 12-year-old; they were caught stealing alcohol; and they were accused of grooming a 12-year-old.

Ultimately, Miller attributed the incidents to “complex mental health issues,” whatever that means, and they apologized, then appropriately disappeared for three years, apparently living in solitude in the woods.

Miller made a brief appearance at Cannes a few weeks ago in support of their friend, Lynne Ramsay (who directed them in We Need to Talk About Kevin), and this week gave an interview to an Italian outlet where they admitted maybe that wasn’t the best idea. “If you’ve been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak be there, you know what I mean?” they told the Italian outlet, according to Page Six.

They’re not wrong — but Miller is a rich weirdo themself. Nevertheless, they said they’d “do anything for Ramsay, despite Cannes being a ‘tough re-entry point,’” and suggested that they’re writing a project they hope Ramsay will direct and cast them in, so they can make their “tentative” return to Hollywood, where there aren’t as many rich weirdos as there used to be, because YouTube and AI are killing all those jobs.

If you’re wondering if Miller is still kind of incoherent and nonsensical, do not worry! Their complex mental issues have not affected their ability to make no sense whatsoever, as evidenced by references they made to their past controversies.

“When we go through those crucibles, if we can survive, which was up in the air for me if I’m being real, we then have that capacity to see other people in their crucibles and just to reach towards them… Like, the capacity to do that, the desire to do that, the willingness to do that… I really believe in digging past that and being a friend to people. And the people who did that for me, they have my lifelong devotion… And also I’m grateful for the revelations of who was not that… Not that I don’t hold a lot of remorse and lamentation… but I’m really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss.”

All of that is basically Ezra Miller-speak for: “I went through some shit, and now I am better able to recognize when other people are going through shit and I can empathize. I appreciate the friends who stuck by me, and as for the rest — sorry, but not sorry, they can go to hell. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.”
