Does Anyone Actually Buy Matt Lucas’s Apology to Millie Bobby Brown?

Recently, Millie Bobby Brown — the star of Stranger Things and daughter-in-law of Jon Bon Jovi — unveiled a new look. Social media, being what it is, mocked this new look. Yesterday, Kayleigh wrote about how Millie Bobby Brown called out these people — including several journalists — for tearing young women down and bullying them.

One of those people was Matt Lucas. I haven’t been blocked by many celebrities on social media, because I am but a poor boy from a poor family, but Lucas is one of the handful. Several years ago, he blocked me — not for critiquing his appearance but for his contributions to The Great British Bake-Off (which I may have done several times, because Matt Lucas sucks).

In his post mocking Brown, Lucas referenced a catchphrase from one of his old Little Britain characters.

After the backlash, Lucas took to Instagram not just to apologize but to suggest that his tweet had been taken out of context.

“Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain. There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo, you had blonde hair and wore a pink top, so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases. I thought you looked terrific, and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style, and secondly because I think you’re brilliant. I would not have posted it if I had thought it would upset you, but I realize it has, and for that, I apologize.”

Now, I’m not familiar with all of Matt Lucas’s work, and without any context for this Vicky Pollard character, I briefly considered that maybe Lucas had been unfairly swept up in the backlash. But then I looked up Vicky Pollard:

So, let me get this straight: Matt Lucas saw a picture of Millie Bobby Brown and, in the context of hundreds of other people mocking her, compared her favorably to an old character he used to play? He thought it would be a nice thing to point out the similarities between Millie Bobby Brown and Vicky Pollard? Do I have that right? Is it because Pollard was funny or had a nice personality? Because I looked up some old skits, and I can tell you the character was neither funny nor kind.

But sure, Matt. He only meant the nicest things!
