One of the first times I went out with my wife was in late 2012 (Jesus). She and I had been messaging on Word With Friends (member?), and she mentioned that a coworker of ours had asked out another coworker of ours, and that she thought this was brave of him. To ask. So, obviously, I assumed she was giving me the go-ahead to ask her out, I did, and we went to see Django Unchained on what I thought was a date, but learned pretty quickly wasn’t. I left it a bit depressed, bought my last pack of cigarettes out of frustration (I had only been quitting because she said she wouldn’t date anyone who smoked), and sulked home like any good 23-year-old.
Things turned out okay, but I can’t help but think that such an experience kind of soured the movie for me. I liked it just fine, but I have not watched it since, nor have I had any real desire to do so. Again, no particular reason, but given that I’m a fan of Quentin Tarantino and have rewatched most of his films, that’s one I haven’t revisited in almost thirteen years. But I may have to if a new announcement ends up bearing any kind of fruit.
Deadline is reporting that a movie is being developed as a sequel to a comic book series that saw Django Freeman team up with Zorro, which was itself a sequel to Django Unchained. The comic was co-written by Tarantino and Matt Wagner, with Esteve Polls doing the artwork. The comic found the bounty hunter teaming up with the legendary Zorro, and Tarantino has been pushing for a movie version for years, even once approaching Antonio Banderas about it.
The script will be written by Brian Helgeland, and while details are obviously mum at this point, we do know that Tarantino will not be behind the camera for this one. However, he was given his blessing for the movie to move forward. The biggest question would be whether or not they can get Jamie Foxx to return. Given that it’s a sequel, they should have no problem dealing with him aging (as humans do), but whether or not he would be interested is another story altogether.
I have not read the comic, but from what I’ve seen this morning, Django learns from an elderly Zorro in the book. If they are continuing that story, perhaps Fo can end up becoming a mentor to a new, young Zorro, just as others have been for him. There are possibilities! This is a mashup where the more I talk about it, the more I feel myself getting excited. I also kind of want a cigarette. Probably shouldn’t look too much into that.
