Coincidentally, I was rewatching that rehearsal of “This Is Me” yesterday because Hugh Jackman’s elation at Keala Settle’s performance is one of those mid-day pick-me-ups I sometimes seek out. It happened to be the same day the gossip magazines reported that Sutton Foster had essentially moved in with Hugh Jackman, likely timed to coincide with the news that Jackman’s ex, Deborra-Lee Furness, had officially filed for divorce.
After announcing their separation two years ago, Furness filed for divorce yesterday, and the statement she gave to The Daily Mail was far from the polished, PR-friendly messages we’d grown accustomed to from the former couple. “My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. It’s a profound wound that cuts deep; however, I believe in a higher power, and that God/the universe—whatever you relate to as your guidance—is always working FOR us.”
The dissolution of a 30-year marriage, particularly following an affair that was arguably the worst-kept secret in the industry, is bound to stir real, raw expressions of pain. Thirty years.
“This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage,” she continued. “I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good—our true purpose. It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values, and boundaries is liberation and freedom.”
Marriages end every day — people fall out of love and sometimes fall back in love with someone new — and thirty years is an extraordinary run in any industry, let alone entertainment. We’re all flawed. But I’m glad to hear Furness is finding her true purpose, whatever form that takes. I wish all these crazy kids the best in love, life, and whatever comes next.
