Daredevil: Born Again only hit Disney+ a few months ago, and already, Charlie Cox is out here talking about wrapping things up. Buddy, you just came back and took a whole season to put the suit back on. What did we do wrong? We can change!
While discussing Season 2 at a recent fan convention, Cox made some interesting remarks that understandably caught the attention of Daredevil fans. Namely, that the second season would be the last. Via Variety:
Asked about his favorite Daredevil costume, Cox mentioned that set photos from Season 2 of Cox wearing his character’s new all-black suit have been leaked online. “The one that we just finished with in Season 2 of ‘Born Again,’ I think, is my favorite, for a couple of reasons,” Cox said. “One, because it is bad-ass, but also because every suit that we’ve had so far, in some way, is represented in the comics.”He continued, “But there’s something that we do in this final season that doesn’t exist in the comics. So, it is unique to our show.”
Fans had every reason to take Charlie Cox at his word. For starters, he would know if the show is ending. Second, despite a seemingly high amount of social media chatter, Daredevil: Born Again is the only Marvel series that didn’t crack the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts. That’s not good! Throw in Kevin Feige openly talking about rebooting the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, and things aren’t looking great for Ol’ Hornhead.
However, Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio was alerted to Cox’s remarks, and he immediately got to work putting this fire out.
“I believe Charlie meant the last season we actually shot meaning the second season,” D’Onofrio tweeted. “Yet he used the term final season so its a bit confusing. But Charlie and i have discussed and we both agree there’s a very good chance for a third season.”
What’s really going on? I don’t know. I don’t work for Marvel. If I had to guess, the most likely scenario is that, yes, Daredevil: Born Again is ending with Season 2. And then we’ll soon hear the announcement of Daredevil: New Subtitle Here. Another scenario is Marvel is finally giving Cox his due and bumping him up to the movies with more than just a short cameo. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so the groundwork is already being laid.
Or this really is the end of the line for Cox’s Daredevil. Marvel is reeling, and again, Kevin Feige has been candid about how Disney+ blew a hole in the franchise. They did way too much and resetting the board is usually the go-to move in the comics when things get out of hand. Plus, you can pay the new actors less, and guess what? Keeping costs down is Marvel’s new mantra, so… yeah.
