I am a fan of Zach Bryan’s music, but not so much the man. We’ve written about his turbulent love life on many occasions, and even his messy social media posts.
But he is undeniably a good songwriter (even if he’s too prolific), and with his latest effort, Bryan has gone to an unlikely place for the musician: Politics. In fact, aside from once calling out transphobia, the Oklahoma musician (and military veteran) tends to shy away from the topic.
Not so with the latest song, “The Fading of the Red, White, and Blue,” which takes aim at the Administration’s mass deportation program.
“And ICE is gonna come, bust down your door /Try to build a house no one builds no more /But I got a telephone /Kids are all scared and all alone,” he sings on the song, before referencing one of the songwriter’s biggest influences, Bruce Springsteen, an outspoken critic of this Administration.
“The Boss stopped bumping, the rock stopped rolling /The middle fingers rising and it won’t stop showing /I got some bad news /The fading of the Red, White and Blue.”
It probably goes without saying that the song has kicked up a lot of dust in MAGA world, where they’re basically calling for his cancellation and comparing him, unfavorably, to The Chicks, which is about the highest praise one could deliver if you ask me (although, I’m also guessing — based on his ex’s comments — that he also fits the description of Natalie Maines’s ‘Gaslighter.’
My guess, however, is that the song will outlast the criticism and hold up much better over time than the policies currently being implemented by this White House. Whatever fans he loses on one side, he’ll pick up the other. It’s not like Springsteen is hurting for fans. Bryan is still a dick, but the man can write a song.
