I tend to get the November Gloomies. I love Halloween (and its now elongated Spooky Season) thoroughly and passionately. There is a deep pit of despair in my stomach when it ends. On November 1st last year my beloved Texas Rangers won the World Series, so any wallowing I could have had was replaced with powerful tears of joy and disbelief. This year, I got much more depressing news post-Halloween and have been f***ing soaking in it ever since. But not today! Today, we focus on some magnificent news!
My love of movies and pageantry combine once a year for the Academy Awards! Sometimes I pretend I’m not interested so I look cool in front of my chill chums, but I always end up watching. Movies are great and I get teared up watching people excitedly experience dream scenarios! There was a period in my life when I thought I might win an Oscar (but it’s too hot today) and I love seeing other people get emotional over that accomplishment. I also love hosting!
That may sound like a general statement, but hosting is its own art form and it can be a thankless job! You’re expected to be funny, charming, and engaging. That can mean different things to different people! Things get even more difficult when the gig you’re hosting wants to take itself very seriously while also indulging in moments of levity and not striking a very equal balance. That’s the Oscars in a nutshell, so it takes a special kind of host to wrangle them.
This year, that host is Conan O’Brien, the man who made me fall in love with hosting. I cannot overstate how excited this announcement made me. Conan is perfect for this role. He will give it its reverence when needed, and not hesitate to cut it down to size. Conan’s entire history as a host is more than enough proof that he is perfect for this job. He’s even hosted awards shows before, using a stint as Emmy’s host on NBC to sing about how much of a ratings hole NBC was!
Still, you need look no further than Conan’s current duties as a podcast host to hear why he is so perfect for this job. Conan reads ads on his show like a lot of podcast hosts. Unlike most hosts, Conan will not hesitate to make fun of the product he’s advertising. He’s so good at not taking it seriously that he makes me think less of other hosts who simply read the copy. I can’t wait to see him bring that energy to the Academy Awards. As well as his writers!
Conan has employed a lot of the same writers for some time. He brought his Writer and Producer, José Arroyo, with him on Hot Ones just for a silly bit. They will help him craft the same comedy we saw on that show. Also, that was less than a year ago! That’s the Conan we’re going to see at the Oscars; One who is willing to burn himself to get a laugh. I’m delirious with excitement at this point, so let’s just watch Conan make the announcement himself while I go to sleep until March 2nd.
