Last week, Charlie Day and Chris Pratt stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The two yucked it up and claimed to be close pals who golf all the time together, which is maybe true. Famous people like to hang with other famous people. Or maybe it’s a fake anecdote that celebs prep in advance as revealed to us in the holy text, Nathan For You. More importantly, the whole thing was so painfully bland that maybe late night talk shows do need to die. Or at the very least, this specific one.
Well, Charlie has redeemed himself.
While appearing on The Trintoria Podcast, Day was asked to name his “favorite Luigi in recent American history.” He took the bait in a move that was far more Always Sunny than family film that needs to make bank over the Easter weekend. To be clear, Day listed his version of Luigi first. Smooth sailing there. But then, as Anya Taylor-Joy covered her face and Keegan-Michael Key laughed hysterically, Charlie said “Luigi Mangione” for his second choice without missing a beat. Didn’t even hesitate.
Don’t get me wrong, I have massive reservations about Luigi’s folk hero status — the guy has more in common with the DOGE dorks than wannabe commies on social media, plus the whole murder thing — but this is pretty good. Especially after the yuck fest on Fallon that made me want to Luigi my own eyeballs not even two minutes in.
You can see the clip below, and I’m sure Universal is loving the 800 headlines this has spawned:
