The Details of the Mark Sanchez Alleged Attack Are Wild

Mark Sanchez is a bad former NFL quarterback turned decent NFL commentator. He’s a 38-year-old man, which is far too old to be getting into drunken fights with random senior citizens. But that’s exactly what happened over the weekend, and Indianapolis prosecutors have since elevated the charges against him from misdemeanors to a felony as more details of the altercation emerge.

Here’s the gist of what happened, according to the victim and video footage that largely backs up his account (the victim, 69, has chosen to remain anonymous). He was driving his truck between two buildings to collect used cooking oil from a hotel as part of his job.

Sanchez, reportedly drunk as hell, apparently didn’t appreciate seeing the man drive through that area, though it’s unclear why it was any of his business. He made it his business anyway, telling the man to leave. The man replied that he was just doing his job and had permission from the hotel owner. Sanchez basically shot back, “Does it look like I care?”

When the man tried to call his supervisor to confirm he had permission, Sanchez blocked him and climbed into the truck, claiming he’d spoken to the hotel manager and that the truck wasn’t supposed to be there (a dubious claim at best).

The two men then began circling the truck, and eventually, Sanchez threw the 69-year-old against a dumpster and started beating him. The man tried using pepper spray to fend him off, but it didn’t work. Realizing Sanchez wasn’t going to stop — again, over something that wasn’t remotely his concern — the older man pulled out a knife and stabbed Sanchez in the upper torso in self-defense.

Sanchez fled and was helped by a bartender at a nearby pub. When police arrived, he was uncooperative and was later taken to a hospital for his stab wounds. The victim was also seriously injured after being beaten by Sanchez, who apparently had nothing better to do on a Saturday night than attack an elderly man just trying to do his job.

Of course, neither the Indiana governor nor lieutenant governor waited for the facts before tweeting statements blaming Indianapolis’s public safety issues, though both quickly deleted their posts once it became clear Sanchez was the aggressor.

For what it’s worth, Sanchez’s former team, the New York Jets, lost to the Dallas Cowboys yesterday, and to make matters worse, Jets fans were on the receiving end of a Jerry Jones middle finger. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Raiders 40-6 in the game Sanchez was supposed to cover.
