Carrie Coon Kind of Denies the Open Marriage Rumor She Basically Started

Carrie Coon was on Marc Maron’s podcast earlier this week. She’s one of my favorite actresses—Nora Durst, her The Leftovers character, is one of my all-time favorites—and she’s also killing it so far in this season of White Lotus.

Coon is married to Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts. They’re also in a Ghostbusters movie together. He’s older — she’s 44, he’s 59 — but for some reason, that just seems right to me. Like, the Carrie Coon in my mind would totally be into an older, brilliant playwright. I’ve heard him in interviews, too. He’s got the rizz.

In any case, they’re not in an open marriage, *wink wink* —- a rumor that started when Coon said some things on WTF with Marc Maron that would probably lead the average person to believe they are in an open marriage. Here are her words. Judge for yourselves.

She says that she and Letts are very honest in their marriage and that they think it’s fun to talk about their crushes.

“That’s the nice thing about a marriage where everything’s on the table: you talk about everything. We’re not jealous people. Like, we don’t have any of those hang-ups. So we never wanna be like, the police. You know? So it’s nice to be in a relationship where we can always talk about, like, ‘Who are you attracted to on set?’”

OK, no biggie. That’s probably fairly common in a lot of marriages.

“It’s so fun. I love it. Tracy’s the kind of person who notices every single woman on the street … And he always tells me who he has a crush on. It’s fun. It’s interesting to know what your partner’s into. I think it’s titillating.”

Uh, “titillating” certainly carries a suggestive energy. But I’ll allow it.

“We don’t really like lines. Lines are really boring. I mean, look, life is short. Finite.”

OK, well, now that’s starting to sound very much like something one-half of a very Bohemian couple might say while eating a grape and eye-f**king a magazine interviewer, at least, in the movie of my mind. But that doesn’t completely suggest an open marriage.

“Monogamy is something we’ve imposed on ourselves. We were supposed to have babies and die when we were like 30. And that’s not the way life is anymore. So I think you have to stay—you have to kinda be open-minded about what engages you in the world and what sparks your imagination and where your passion is. And I think if you’re willing to stay open to that, then you’re living a more full life. And I don’t think either one of us would wanna keep the other from living.”

I mean … what are we doing here, Carrie? That seems like a fairly obvious indictment of monogamy, and the opposite of monogamy is open — a word that is used twice in that paragraph. No judgment, obviously! But also, she’s definitely talking about an open marriage, right?

Um, OK! If you insist, Carrie! Whatever she says! She’s the best actress of her generation, on this side of Regina King, so she can say whatever she wants, as far as I’m concerned.
