Can We Boycott the 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' Trailer, Too?

Like a lot of folks, I cancelled my Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu subscriptions last week because Disney suspended Jimmy Kimmel. I didn’t think it’d make much of a difference because I didn’t, initially, think that there would be a lot of momentum behind it, especially without organizations like Media Matters pushing the cancellation campaign (because even Media Matters has been financially bullied into submission).

I was wrong. It seems to have caught on, with a number of celebrities even cancelling their Disney+ subscriptions (Howard Stern announced he did so this morning). The subs continue to run until the next pay period (mine is October 12th), but I am desperately hoping this gets worked out because I do not want Sterlin Harjo’s news series The Lowdown to get caught up in this mess. I don’t want Harjo to be punished because Bob Iger is a coward.

I suspect, however, that Disney+ is trying to discourage more cancellations by releasing the trailer for its next Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu today, but I’m not going to show it. If you want to watch it, you know where to find it. But I will take this moment to remind you that The Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal, is standing with Kimmel. Will he promote The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer or his expected role in the forthcoming Avengers movies?

It is worth noting, too, that he’s not the only Disney actor boycotting. Marisa Tomei, who plays Aunt May in the Spider-Man movies, reposted an “unsubscribe and boycott” message, as did Tatiana Maslany, who plays She-Hulk. Damon Lindelof has also vowed not to work for Disney until this mess is cleared up. I also suspect that any celebrity seen promoting a Disney or Hulu project while Jimmy Kimmel is under suspension is likely to face at least some blowback.

There’s some good stuff coming for the rest of the year that Disney’s bungling may endanger, including Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, Predator: Badlands, Zootopia 2, Tron: Ares, and the next Avatar film. Do the right thing, Disney. No one wants to boycott Jeremy Allen White’s Springsteen film. But we will.

Also, that The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer looks pretty mid, but it is as good as any excuse to remind everyone what’s at stake: Free speech in America. If Disney thinks they can release the trailer for a much-hyped release and make us forget about all this, they’re dead wrong.
