Brett Goldstein Seems a Little Baffled by the Resurrection of 'Ted Lasso'

The fourth season of Ted Lasso is in the works. They’re in the writers’ room. We don’t have many details yet, except that the Jason Sudeikis character will be coaching a women’s soccer team and that they are recasting the son. Bringing in a new actor to play the same character feels a little like the analogy Brett Goldstein gave for bringing the series back for a fourth season, as he explained on the Wild Card podcast.

“I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot. He had a cat that died. He loved his cat, and the cat was run over, and they buried the cat—buried it,” he explained on the podcast. “And he was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he prayed and he wished. ‘I wish the cat would come back.’ And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat. And I think about that all the time.”

Yes, that analogy does sound a bit like the plot of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, except no cat rose from the dead. It was the same cat. They just buried the wrong one. So, are the first three seasons of Ted Lasso the other cat that got run over? (The third season is, perhaps, and maybe that’s why audiences didn’t understand it: It was the wrong cat!)

“And so, I’m like, no wonder this guy is f**ked in the head,” Goldstein added, “because he thinks death isn’t real, so of course he’s insane. He’s such a weird guy, ‘cause he thinks he can bring things back from the dead.”

Is Jason Sudeikis the weird guy who’s f**ked in the head? I’m so confused by this analogy.

“I guess I’m saying I feel like that kid,” Goldstein explained. “Like, ‘We buried it … We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.”

Oh, so Goldstein is the weird kid who’s f**ked in the head, who buried the neighbor’s cat but is happy his own cat is still alive. But, like, someone’s cat is still dead, right? I guess that cat is AFC Richmond, since Lasso will be coaching a different team in the fourth season.
