I’ve been having a battle with my weight since I was a young boy, and it sucks. Some days, I feel great and look at myself with pride. Other days, I look in the mirror with complete disgust and disappointment, and nothing can convince me otherwise. What sucks is that my body often looks the same in either scenario. I’ve also made strides in my life (especially since my kids were born) toward healthier living, so I know I’m trending in the right direction, and my doctor says I’m fine, but I still can’t look at myself without disdain at least half of the week.
It sucks! There are plenty of reasons that I am this way, many of which were out of my control (I can’t go back in time and tell my dad not to make an exaggerated gasp when I say I don’t want seconds). That doesn’t mean I don’t try to control them, though. I’ll make jokes about myself, or I’ll wear outfits that show off my arms cause I usually like how they look. This morning, I was in an Instagram video with my shirt off (an in-the-moment decision) because we needed it to get the shot (in a tattoo parlor). While I’m slightly mortified now, I’m happy that I did it.
Part of feeling good about myself is owning my journey, and I can see Brendan Fraser doing the same thing. Fraser, who was as slim as can be during the earlier years of his career, has put on weight in the decades since the early 2000s. He’s been very open about his personal life, discussing the difficulties of his divorce, health problems from years of stunts, and being sexually assaulted, all of which contributed to depression for the actor at a time when he felt Hollywood had stopped calling.
However, Fraser has been welcomed back by Hollywood with open arms, especially after he won an Oscar for his role in The Whale. However, fans never stopped loving him, and now, we get to see him return in one of his most treasured franchises: The Mummy. Fraser will reunite with Rachel Weisz for a new entry in the franchise, and he briefly discussed his return on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. When asked about the sequel, Fraser said he was excited to get the band back together and also talked about his weight. “However, please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape,” he explained.
Certain expectations come with being in an action movie, so I understand why Brendan would address this directly. Folks in these types of movies are put on a specialty diet and given a personal trainer by a studio to get them what they consider camera-ready. But, as the man said, he’s 57! A lot of that stuff is harder when you get older! That said, the trainer and plan he’s given will probably be specific to his age. I dunno! He seems happy, and that’s all that matters. I just hope he’s not putting too much pressure on himself (and that I’m not projecting too much). He’s Brendan Fraser, and he’s giving us another Mummy movie; it’s gonna be great regardless.
